The Power of Generous Assumptions
3 minute read
"What's the most generous assumption I can make about this situation?" This mantra, echoing like the chorus of a catchy song, has transformed my career. I not only apply it personally but also challenge every leader I encounter to do the same. The impact can be truly transformational.
Scenario:
An employee consistently submits incomplete work. Initially, frustration and criticism might be your go-to reactions, especially regarding how their actions impact you and the team. “Why are they ignoring our processes?”
Now, consider applying a generous assumption: "I wonder if they have the correct process document or if something is unclear."
Confrontation with Original Assumption:
Your initial approach might sound like this: “You really need to make sure you are following our process document for this type of project. Turning in this quality of work is not only unprofessional but it is disrespectful of my time and makes it extremely hard for our team to meet deadlines.”
Confrontation using Generous Assumptions:
A more empathetic approach under generous assumptions might be: “I noticed when you turn in your projects, you are not following our standard process. Can you help me understand why?”
By adopting generous assumptions, you give your teammate the benefit of the doubt and allow them to provide context. Depending on their response, you may still address the quality of work, or you may discover issues like an outdated process document or perhaps they never received the process document in the first place. Now, you are solving a different problem. It is best to start with a generous assumption and let their reaction take you in your next direction.
Put Yourself in The Employees Shoes:
Picture yourself as the employee, blissfully unaware of a crucial process document. Now, observe the sharp contrast in your emotional response when you envision your supervisor's feedback under two different assumptions – the original and the generous. Under the original assumption, you might feel attacked, ready to defend yourself. The feedback may come across as accusatory, triggering a defensive stance. Contrastingly, with generous assumptions, you might feel grateful for the feedback. Appreciation may set in, realizing you work with a leader who provides space for open discussions. It fosters a sense of collaboration and understanding.
Working with leaders who embrace generous assumptions is a game-changer. It not only fosters a positive and supportive work environment but also cultivates trust and loyalty within your team. Ultimately, it creates a space where individuals are inspired to deliver exceptional work for you and your team.
