I'm Thinking of a Career Shift - Now What?
3 minute read
Are you considering a career shift? Whether you’re feeling stuck in your current job or have a burning desire to pursue something new, it’s important to navigate the transition thoughtfully. Let me share my story.
Once upon a time, I embarked on a career in accounting. Armed with a degree, I secured a position at a prestigious firm. Yet, after a couple of years, doubts crept in - this wasn’t for me. I knew I wanted to go into Human Resources, but how?
No matter where you are in your career journey, these tips can help smooth the transition:
Start Small
When I decided to pivot, I was entrenched in accounting. Shifting to Human Resources was a seismic change - new skills, a new path. Lacking formal education and experience in HR, I didn’t give up. Instead, I pursued entry-level roles that nudged me toward my goal. I started as an Administrative Professional, accepting a pay cut for the promise of future fulfillment. It wasn’t perfect, but betting on myself paid off. Don’t let the jump intimidate you - take it one small step at a time!
Find Your Niche
Consider your ideal career scenario. Which industries and companies align with your skills and aspirations? Leverage your current expertise to bridge into your desired field. For me, staying within accounting but targeting HR roles was strategic. I understood the industry’s nuances, its language, and its demands, making it easier to pitch my value to prospective employers.
Craft Your Story
Why shift careers? This question will follow you everywhere. I couldn’t quite admit I hated my job, but I could emphasize my passion for aligning people with business goals. Your story matters - embrace it, refine it, and share it confidently. Authenticity and passion resonate; they validate your decision to change paths. If people can feel your passion, nobody will question your switch.
