Apply To The Job
2 minute read
I have a secret to share with you: you don’t need to have all the qualifications listed on a job posting before applying.
Recently, I met with a client who was excited about a job opportunity but felt discouraged because they didn’t meet every requirement. My response? Apply to the job!
Applying for a position where you’re vastly underqualified is a big no. However, if you fulfill most of the requirements or strongly believe you’re a good fit, don’t hesitate to submit your application. You could enhance your resume with a summary section that highlights why you’re suited for the role. Additionally, if there’s an option for a cover letter, use it to articulate your story and why you’re a compelling candidate.
In my experience, I’ve often seen job postings as wish lists, employers outlining their ideal candidate. However, finding someone who checks every single box can be challenging. Sometimes, as they see the types of candidates rolling in, they start to adjust their wants/needs/expectations, or in some cases, they might prioritize cultural fit a bit more than technical skills - recruiting is a fluid process. Keeping that in mind, why count yourself out?
You never know what may happen so if you believe you can excel in a role, go ahead and apply. The worst case scenario is you don’t get an interview, but the best case scenario could be landing your dream job!
