How to Create a Vision Board for Your Goals
3 minute read
If you're stuck in a rut, personally or professionally, I like to find inspiration and create something tangible I can look at to remind me what I'm trying to accomplish. Over the years this has looked like a mind map in my planner, a list of intentions in my notes app, and most recently, a Vision Board. Initially, I was struggling to find inspiration for my career goals this year. I knew I wanted to do something outside of my comfort zone, but I couldn’t quite figure out what, or where to start.
Creating a Vision Board helped me visualize my ultimate goals in a way that I couldn’t have done otherwise. In doing this, I was able to take my Vision and create smaller milestones throughout the year to start working towards my ultimate goal. Think you could use a Vision? Read on to see how!
You can make a Vision Board virtually using tools like Canva, or even a Pinterest board, but I find the process of creating something tangible more fulfilling. For the record, I am not an artistically creative person whatsoever - anyone can make a Vision Board and there's no wrong way to do it!
If you're ready to unlock your vision, here's what you need:
A base. This can be a canvas, poster board, or anything you can glue stuff to.
Inspiration. stickers, magazines, books, photos - variety is key. Make sure you grab all different genres of items: pop culture, travel, architectural digest - the broader the better.
Tools. Glue sticks, double-sided tape, regular tape, scissors
Once you have your items, spend time going through all of your inspiration and cutting out anything that speaks to you: words, photos, people, art, etc. There are no rules. Don't look for context, don't think too hard, just look for things that jump out at you and feel right.
After you have a pile of things that make you happy, start laying out your board. I started with my base and then laid items on top until I liked what I had and then taped everything down. The fun part about this process is you'll find items you originally cut out that just don't make it on the board - this is where your vision really starts to take shape. Sometimes the item just doesn't excite you as much as you thought, or maybe it doesn't vibe with the rest of the board - trust the process and throw it out!
Once you feel happy with your vision Board, take a Step back and look at what you created. That's your vision!! It should make you happy to look at it. Hang it somewhere you can see it every day to remind yourself what you're working for what makes you happy, or whatever message your board is sending you.
Sometimes we don't even know what our wants and desires are until we let them spill out of us. I have my vision for the year, do you?
